How to say the year in English

Years

Years are normally divided into two parts.

16    86
Sixteen     Eighty six
  • 1812 = Eighteen twelve
  • 1939 = Nineteen thirty nine
  • 1066 = Ten sixty six
  • 1945 = Nineteen forty five

When a year ends in a number between 01 and 09 the 0 is pronounced 'oh' and then the single digit is said.

  • 1504 = Fifteen oh four
  • 1802 = Eighteen oh two

If the year ends with 00 then it is normally said as hundred.

  • 1400 = Fourteen hundred
  • 1700 = Seventeen hundred

 2000 - 2010

The year 2000 is normally said as "two thousand".

For the years 2001 - 2009 we normally say two thousand and the number;

  • 2001 = Two thousand and one
  • 2002 = Two thousand and two
  • 2008 = Two thousand and eight

 2010 -

People got a little confused after 2010 and you can hear different people say two thousand and ten or twenty ten but after a few years things settled down and it is now normal to say the year in two halves again.

  • 2015 = Twenty fifteen
  • 2016 = Twenty sixteen
  • 2017 = Twenty seventeen
